How We Deliver - FAQ

What is rhinoplasty (nose job)?

A rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is used to change the shape or look of a nose or improve its function due to trauma or birth defects. The nose is the central part of the human face; therefore, facial expression largely depends on its shape. The purpose of nose surgery is to correct the shape and size of the nose. It is possible:

  • To reduce the whole nose;
  • To reduce or remove the hump of the nose;
  • To reshape the nasal tip (to make it thinner, reduce, raise, etc.);
  • To change the shape of the nostrils.

How should I prepare for a rhinoplasty?

You have to consult with your doctor to find out what you have to do, or not to do, prior to operation. This may include dietary, smoking, drinking, and medication restrictions. Make sure you get plenty of time off work, you get help around the house and give yourself time to heal.

How is the surgery performed?

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and lasts 2–4 hours on average. Two operation techniques can be employed for correction of nasal deformities: In closed rhinoplasty, incisions are positioned inside the nostrils, so the scars remain invisible after the surgery. In open rhinoplasty, an incision is made in the area of the nasal columella, which is extended in the mucosa of both nostrils. After the surgery, a tiny scar, a few millimeters in length, remains in the area of the nasal columella. Rhinoplasty can be done to correct a structural deformation (a bump or a hook), the nasal tip, and deviated septum as well. After the surgery, the surgeon may place special nasal packing inside the nose, i.e. the pieces of gauze, which are removed on the first or second day following the surgery.

What should be known after surgery?

  • The sutures are not removed from the nasal mucosa, they dissolve by themselves;
  • Following the open rhinoplasty approach, the sutures from the nasal columella are removed after 7 days;
  • Bruising occurring after the surgery may remain up to 3 weeks;
  • Following a complete nose surgery, a special splint of the nose is worn for 10–12 days;
  • For the first 2 months after the surgery, the patient should refrain from wearing glasses as it can cause displacement of not completely healed nasal bones and alter the shape of the nose.

How much time off should I take from work?

At least one week is recommended. The plastic splint on your nose will be removed after seven days. You may still be mildly bruised under your eyes, so if this will interfere with your work you may want to take two weeks off.

How much pain will I have after surgery?

Not that much. Most of the patients are saying that it is annoying than painful. Anyway, if there will be some pain, then it will be easily controlled with a medication.

Will I be swollen? When will I see the final result?

Unfortunately, swelling is impossible to avoid. Your cheeks will be swollen for approximately 1-2 weeks after surgery, but this is often only noticeable to the patient. Your nasal skin will be swollen for longer. It may take months for the swelling at the tip of your nose to resolve, and the final result will not be seen until the swelling is gone.

Will I have visible scars after rhinoplasty?

With the closed rhinoplasty technique all incisions are inside the nose and no scars are visible. If you will have the open rhinoplasty then there will be a very small, unnoticeable scar in the skin between your nostrils.

What are the risks of rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a safe surgical procedure. Anyway, as with any surgery, things can go wrong. The most common risks are an infection, adverse reaction to the anaesthesia, and excessive bleeding. As well there is a slight possibility that you will need additional surgery in the future. In the case of cosmetic rhinoplasty, there is a risk that you may be unhappy with the result.a

Do patients ever need another rhinoplasty?

In some cases patients want slight changes to be made after a primary rhinoplasty. Complaints can be the result of the healing process and not mistakes that were made during the primary surgery. Please discuss this with your surgeon prior to operation, and find out how in the case of mistakes they will be fixed.
